COMPANION NOTES: On Haekel, tunicates, and having a soft spine
A dip into the history of biology, some notes on embryology and say hello to marine life, plus a guided practice, links to my image collections and play list, and some journaling prompts.
Developing a first-person perspective of our body cells, tissues and systems is central to the idea of embodied anatomy. Using factual information, we can find pathways into our body where we can then explore creatively through movement, reflection, drawing, and writing.
Remember the images from the previous Field Notes? the ones that showed the digestive tract? This is the anatomy we’ll focus on in this edition but first of all, I’d like to offer a glimpse of evolutionary biology, a few facts from the embryological development of the body, and then introduce you to a relatively simple marine organism called the Tunicate.
